This momma elk stumbled upon us from behind the trail and definitely startled us. Sam and I tried to get off the trail as fast as possible but only had a few feet from the trail to the lake and large boulders to the other side. We darted behind some trees on the shore and watched as she didn’t mind us being so close but her baby calf didn’t want anything to do with us. Before long we were in between the two as the baby started crying and trying to climb the rock to avoid us. Finally after a few tense minutes momma instilled some confidence and before long they were on their way up and into the marshy grass along the lake.
